Q: Wouldn’t the Army be tempted to apply some advanced destruction method to cause a sewer blockage?

A: Possible. The design can be pretty destruction resistant at the downstream end while bridging & can be designed to loosen in case of power failure. Attacks could be sensed & signaled to some extent. The retrieved object would show damage from what?? It’s an issue to think about, but seemingly not the greatest hurdle.

The internal access through the clear out drain is often a thin rectangle in shape inside of the pipe. Long snakes are the norm. The robot could have multiple segments, joined by cable, which work together to achieve the desired outcomes.

A design concept for a centipede leg section. In the middle of the snake, at the leg section, is a 1/2″ x 1/2″ core, that contains slotted 1/4″ x 1/8″ legs made out of something tough that are powered tracks that come out & work in various ways for bracing & propulsion when the snake gets into the big pipe. If they can push it into position through the access openings that’s also good.

Blocking all of the liquid flow in the larger pipe could be accomplished by inflating a membrane after bracing.

Should be easy to keep the pressure of the inflation less than the estimated baring capacity of the legs.

Q: The sewer space is very limited & notoriously problematic for things to get stuck in. What is the fail safe plan in case of mechanical or power failure?

A: Tricky problem. I think the device needs to have a robust way of anticipating that & move to its compact position where it won’t prevent regular sewer function & will be accessible for some kind of a tow truck device to pull it away (or, unfortunately, get washed away)
