For understanding natural language we may think of discourse contexts as adding information about various situations, which are like labeled graphs. The question of interpretation relates to which deltas of these graphs are occurring. Which did the speaker anticipate & which can we guess at based on our current knowledge state? What we believe about the speakers capacity and intentions for informative content is relevant to this interpretation. For this & other reasons, we may wish to provide objective measures of “information” conveyed in the process of describing probability distributions over situations/diagrams/graphs. Unlike in regular coding theory, there is not 1 preestablished probability measure over an outcome set.

ModeratorAlso helpful to the naturalness of the “informative language” conception is to think about assigning different utilities to reductions in the entropy of different questions we are interested in. Again, speaker motivations about what we should be interested in are a clue to interpretation.
