Research Q: What forms would be most useful for modeling similarity or confusion/substitutability data sets?

The naive working statistician view is something like this:
build regularized log normal models, starting with single factors/tests, then adding xy factors if warranted, then adding xyz factors if warranted etc. Normalization can be computationally expensive, so only due that were relevant. Regularization – which method is best? Crossvalidation/bootstrap plus extra penalty for small sets…That method may be too inefficient for large data sets. It feels like we are missing a practical model for moving from small data sets to large data sets in a smooth way.
