The tweet below focuses us on a nice example of how pragmatics & pragmatic inference are important in all NLP understanding. One part of pragmatics is creating models for propositional attitudes which include counterfactuals plans, stories, beliefs of others, etc. In a children’s story context, magical creatures are often introduced with a name or a few words, and we learn more about their properties as we go. Here the text sounds like a children’s story, but the picture and speaker context inform us that the topic is probably a nickname for an old aircraft variety.
