joshFor this too, sensible stopping conditions pre-suppose some sort of Bayesian prior on admissible Lipschitz conditions or Lipschitz-like constraints. But the contribution may allow those constraints to be more flexible. “I found the sewer grate” is an interesting development, suggesting the possibility of additional sewer grates…were our theorists prepared for this possibility?”

joshI believe there are classes of real problems where the Bayesian belief state of theory is not expressible as any nice-looking analytical formula. Design priors based around 20 questions might still be something software can compute with.

joshOne category of problem might have the feature that it’s not too expensive to create a set of acyclic graphs that make an epsilon cover of the feasible region of the problem while evaluating proposed solution points is more expensive (for computation or for real). There is no connection between local minima because the feasible region itself is not connected. Do we expect any kind of similar phenomena in the unconnected regions? That’s additional theory. My point is that the connection between studied problem forms & actual operations research frontiers might be very loose or almost non-existant.
