I have some amateur experience with haircuts. It usually works best to focus on first shortening the hair that is furthest from the center of the scalp; then later see how the other layers fall over the pre-cut outer layer. So I advocate 3 general layers of mechanism – 1 layer to lift away the hair that is closer to the center, another layer to lift the hair to be cut away from the skin, & then a scissors/trimmer to cut the hair.
