This study can be part of a more general effort to link microstructural properties of synthetic fabrics to desirable production & consumer properties – e.g. texture, softness, smoothness, durability, elasticity, breathability, wrinkle-free, etc. Perhaps that is old hat for synthetic fabrics but new for synthetic fabrics with micro-constructed/chemically painted surfaces.

Looking at this video of real leather production got me to think about the possibility of forming base layers from synthetic combinations of proteins & lipids. I don’t know enough about it to make a prediction of how easy or hard that is. But I believe GT has experts who could make more serious suggestions than any past tries in that direction. It might turn out to be something significant.

Interesting Q (for me at least) is how to economically start forming thread like structures out of proteins. I imagine something like two sheets of ribbed, non-stick mold could be pressed together to heat/bake long lines in the creases, that could then be cut into slimmer strips by some machining.
