I took a look at the new NGBoost paper mentioned in the publications, with interesting intuitions about non-parametric regression. Thinking further about my version of their intuition, I say this:
In non-parametric regression it is a common theoretical framework to describe errors of fit in terms of a) parameter noise of the model fit + b) random noise. Sometimes this is broken out further as a1) parameter noise + a2) model specification – i.e. inability to capture systematic variation of ideal f(x) with the model class, + b) random noise. In reality we have a1) parameter noise + a2) computational noise due to practical inability to examine every fit possibility in our model class, + a3) misspecification, + b) random noise. The intuition is that we should often be looking for cues to reduce a2) based on our ability to find what they call the natural gradient – a local orthogonalization of b) random noise + a1)+a3 – if regional differences in the size of the residual or apparent bias are a cue to work harder to the unknown size of a2).
