I was motivated by considering, for example, the problem of software for designing analog or mixed analog/digital circuits based on selecting components from catalogs & computing designs that maximize given cost & performance criteria relative to the design constraints. In an engineering setting, versions of this algorithm might call itself recursively to solve sub-problems that go with particular design approaches. There are many very different ways to search the vast solution spaces – e.g. based on recipes, raw iteration, or abstract design & search for similar components.
